The Murray Darling straddles the states of New South Wales and Victoria with the majority of the region falling in Victoria. Plantings are concentrated around the towns of Mildura, Euston, Red Cliffs, Robinvale and Merbein.
The climate is warm to hot with long sunshine hours resulting in rich, ripe berry fruit flavours. Negligible growing season rainfall means that irrigation is an essential feature of viticulture. However relative humidity is low so disease pressures and therefore spray requirements, are minimal.
As with most inland regions, the continental influence is strong with consequent high shifts in the diurnal temperature range but not sufficiently so as to make spring frosts a problem. Due to high daytime temperatures, grapes are harvested at night to retain maximum varietal characters resulting in higher quality fruit and wine.
Topographically the region is flat but subtle differences in elevation are important for drainage. The soil is unique to the Murray River system.
